Obama’s future of $5 trillion dollar budgets?

Welcome to VoteFacts.  According to the Romney campaign,

"President Obama’s fiscal year 2012 budget places the nation on a trajectory that will increase federal spending over the next ten years, leading it past the $4 trillion threshold in 2015, the $5 trillion mark in 2019, and on its way to $5.8 trillion by 2021—approximately twice its level when he took office."

Before we get into those budget facts, it needs to be said that President Obama's fiscal year 2012 budget is not law. Therefore, it is not going to place the nation on any specific trajectory.  It can only be said that the president's budget "would have" done and of these things, had it been passed.  In fact, the congress has rejected all of the budgets submitted by the Obama Administration.

It also needs to be said that the Romney camp was speaking about President Obama's budget for 2012. (The President has submitted a budget for FY 2013 as well.)   Here is what the Congressional budget office has to say about President Obama's FY 2012 budget

The Congressional Budget Office projected that The President's budget would lead to a federal spending level of $5.2 trillion dollars by 2019, about $52 billion more than what they projected in their baseline for that year, and nearly $5.8 trillion by 2021.  CBO Report, Page 4

So, is that $5.8 trillion approximately twice its level when he took office?  Let's look.  According to the numbers from the Office of Budget and Management Table, spending in 2008, the year before Barack Obama took office, was:

• $2.982 trillion

So spending would have gone from $2.98 trillion to $5.75 trillion.  You have seen the numbers. You've seen the facts. So tell us what you think.  Is it a fact, or is it fiction, that President Obama's fiscal year 2012 budget upped spending past $4 trillion and on its way to the $5.8 trillion dollar mark by 2021?
