Only 47 percent of Americans paid income taxes in 2010.

Welcome to VoteFacts.  We found a statement from an ABC News article that we thought needed some research.  The statement was this, "Only 47 percent of Americans paid income taxes in 2010."

First, ABC is likely not talking about this as a percentage of "Americans", but is instead talking about the percentage of tax units (symbolizing 1 return filed not just one person), a very important distinction.   Also, it is quite likely that this is merely a typo on the part of ABC.  So let's get the facts straight.

According to a Tax Policy Center analysis, in 2010 there were 161.5 million tax units filed and of that, 81.6 million paid taxes - which calculates out to be 50.5% paying income taxes.

Meanwhile, 49.5 million tax returns had a zero or negative income tax liabilities - in other words - they did not pay federal income taxes. (although they may have paid federal payroll taxes).  TPC Table
