In August, manufacturers cut the most jobs in two years.

Welcome to VoteFacts. We began the day by looking at the claim that the Obama Administration created over 500,000 manufacturing jobs during their tenure thus far.

As everyone knows, the job market is constantly fluctuating and we want you to have the most up-to-date information. So this afternoon we're looking at a claim from Newsmax that, "[L]ast month, manufacturers cut the most jobs in two years and the number of people in the work force dropped to its lowest level in 31 years".  We've addressed the work force number before, but what happened with manufacturing jobs last month?  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

  • Manufacturing employment edged down in August (-15,000).  BLS, midway down page

But was that the most manufacturing jobs cut in two years?  Let's get that historical data from the BLS website.  Here are their graph and table.

As you can see from their data, there was a drop in September of 2011, but nowhere near the August 2012 number of 15,000.  Since the drop of 17,000 in August of 2010, manufacturing jobs have been increasing nearly every month.  Still, you've looked at the data, now you get to go vote on the merits of this statement - Fact or Fiction - Last month manufacturers cut the most jobs in 2 years.
